What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a profession dedicated to improving the lives of people
by naturally restoring proper function to the nervous system. Doctors
of Chiropractic look to the spine to find specific locations where the
body is not functioning properly. These areas are often where the
body is “storing stress” and the condition is termed Vertebral
Subluxation Complex (subluxation). Once these areas have been
identified, the chiropractor is able to remove the subluxation gently
through a chiropractic adjustment. The immediate effect of the
adjustment is a restoration of the proper nerve flow from the brain to
the body and from the body back to the brain. Chiropractic is based on
the principle that the body must have constant and appropriate nerve
communication to function properly.
What is a subluxation?
The Vertebral Subluxation Complex (subluxation) occurs when one of
the 24 movable bones that make up the spinal column loses its normal
motion. While a subluxation may indicate a structural misalignment,
the most devastating impact results from the lack of motion.
Another way of thinking of a subluxation is a movement deficiency
syndrome. To function appropriately, the brain requires motion of
these segments for appropriate stimulation. Just like many cavities in
teeth, subluxations may cause no pain, and you may be completely
unaware that they are there until you have a proper evaluation. Other
times, subluxations alert you of the problem by causing pain and other
symptoms. Either way, the body cannot function at its best with
subluxations.
What do Chiropractors do for subluxations?
Once a chiropractor has done a thorough evaluation of the spine and
has determined that there are subluxations, he or she will recommend a
course of care to address this problem. Once identified, the
chiropractor will remove the subluxation by gently moving the bone
which has become less mobile. This is called a spinal adjustment. Some
techniques use only the hands of the doctor to adjust and remove
subluxations, while others use specialized hand-held instruments or
chiropractic tables to assist the adjustment.
What causes subluxations?
The most basic answer to this is negative stress. There are three
dimensions of stress: physical, chemical, and mental. There are both
positive stressors and negative stressors in each category. For example,
a positive physical stressor is exercise, and a negative physical stressor
is poor posture. When your body is exposed to stress (always) it must
adapt to it. Most of the time, the intelligence in your body can adapt
without any consequence. When overwhelmed with stress (pandemic
in our society), your body’s intelligence must adapt by storing that
stress somewhere in the body. This most commonly occurs near and
around the spine. The result is the movable bones in your spine move
less, and this disrupts the overall function to your body. In fact, a
subluxation itself is a negative stress to your body!
How long Will I Need Chiropractic Care?
Each person is a unique individual therefore each person’s care plan
will be different. Typically, a program of care consisting of frequent
visits at the beginning will be recommended. As the body becomes
healthier and better able to handle the negative stress in life, visit
frequency will be reduced until the body has reached a point of
optimal spinal function. Just like an airplane taking off, more energy
(adjustments) is required at the beginning. To keep the airplane flying
at cruising altitude, less energy is required (less frequent adjustments).
The amount of time to meet these initial gains is variable. Once these
goals have been met, a person must evaluate what their goals for health
are. If a person is interested in optimizing the function of their body,
wellness care is a vital component. Most people find that they are
better able to enjoy life when not limited by the negative stressful
effects of subluxation. Wellness care is defined as the required
frequency of visits to keep the spine optimally well. Just like an initial
program of care, wellness may be different for each person.
Occasionally, a person will discontinue at this point, and slowly will
move back to where they began (just like an airplane without the
engines running will descend). Periodic checkups can help detect these
problems early so they do not progress into more serious problems.
This is often more expensive and requires more visits in total than
wellness care.

Can children be adjusted?
Chiropractic is safe for everyone. Even the tiniest of infants (as young
as one day old!) may be adjusted if they have nervous system
interference in the form of subluxation. Many infants do experience
subluxation as a result of a traumatic birth experience (C-section,
induced labor, forceps, etc.). Very gentle techniques are required for
small infants and children. As we all know, children learn and adapt
very quickly. This means that the amount of care required to help a
child will usually be much less than that for an adult. At MFC, we
utilize specific techniques to adjust children of all ages, and Dr.
McCann is a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric
Association.
Chiropractic can help any person who has stress in their life that is
causing subluxation. This means that we can help improve the health
and life of children, adults, and the elderly.
Is Chiropractic safe?
Absolutely, chiropractic has an excellent safety record. Chiropractic is
a conservative approach to health that avoids invasive procedures or
addictive drugs. A thorough history and examination, including x-ray
analysis (if necessary), help reveal areas of the spine that may be
causing nervous system malfunction. The gentle techniques that are
required to remove subluxations will not cause harm to the body.
In the words of a recent New Zealand government study, chiropractic
care is "remarkably safe".
What type of education do chiropractors have?
Chiropractors have a doctorate degree and must complete a four-year
chiropractic program (in addition to undergraduate prerequisite
studies) including a clinical internship. The course load is roughly
equivalent in hours and credits to the training required for an M.D. The
focus of chiropractic education is on the function of the body and
nervous system. The science of chiropractic requires special emphasis
on anatomy, normal and adaptive physiology, biomechanics,
neurology, x-ray and many different spinal adjusting techniques.
To be licensed as a Doctor of Chiropractic, each candidate must pass a
series of rigorous National Board Examinations in addition to an
individual State Board Examination. Chiropractors must also attend
continuing education classes to retain their licensure.
If I Crack My Own Neck or Back, am I Giving Myself an
Adjustment?
Many people relate the sound of popping their own neck or back to
the sound often heard in conjunction with a chiropractic adjustment.
However, the two are definitely not the same thing! Many people feel
an urge to pop their neck or back because one of the vertebra is not
moving properly. Unfortunately, without the specificity of a
chiropractic adjustment, the bone that actually moves is not the one
that is causing the discomfort or pain. This is why a person who has
popped their own neck or back often feels the urge to do so again
within a few short minutes or hours.
Doctors of Chiropractic use specific forces and vectors to restore
proper motion to those bones that are not moving properly
(subluxated). This is restoring proper motion to an improperly moving
segment. Popping your own neck or back is usually making a
compensatory joint (one that already moves too much!) even more
hyper-mobile. If you feel this urge to pop your neck or back, you
likely have subluxation, and it would benefit you to have a thorough
chiropractic evaluation to determine if you could benefit from
chiropractic care.
Do I Need a Referral to Visit a Chiropractor?
Absolutely not! Doctors of Chiropractic are primary care physicians
for most insurance companies. This means you do not need to get a
referral before visiting your chiropractor. This also applies to work
injuries and automobile accident injuries. If it is necessary,
chiropractors can make appropriate referrals to other health care
professionals.
