When a cold, flu, or allergy attack causes the throat and Eustachian tubes to become inflamed, fluid may build up inside the ear canal. Bacteria can grow in this trapped fluid, causing painful pressure. Children are particularly susceptible, with incidences peaking at around two years of age. However, if they go untreated, recurring ear infections may continue through adolescence and even into adulthood.
A common area of focus is subluxation or dysfunction in the upper cervical spine. This can result from the birthing process or other physical trauma, including the everyday microtraumas young children experience, such as falls while learning to walk. When normal movement and function in the upper neck are disrupted, it may affect the surrounding muscles and nervous system function and contribute to problems with normal Eustachian tube function and drainage, allowing fluid to build up in the middle ear. |

In one study of 332 children with chronic ear infections, close to 80% did not experience another ear infection during the six-month period following their initial chiropractic visits.¹ While every child is different, these results support what we have seen in our own office: many children with recurring ear infections respond very well to chiropractic care. |
