Post by Adeline Rowley, Chiropractic Assistant at McCann Family Chiropractic Getting into, and recovering from, a car accident is stressful – mentally, emotionally, and physically. There are usually at least a few tears at some point. Plus, you’re often shaking from the shock, and big emotions are expected. Then you have to start making calls over the next few days. What a mental marathon! From 911 to family to insurance companies, you are doing a ton of work to resolve issues.
Take care of your body now, so that you can reach wellness in life. We highly recommend calling a chiropractor within a few days of your accident. What happens to YOUR body during a car accident? |
General Soreness and Pain Even minor car accidents can leave you with several days or even months of soreness. This pain comes from damage to the tendons, muscles, or nerves in your body, leading to reduced function. The skeletal system is the headquarters of the body. Digestive issues, emotions, headaches, and many other inconveniences can be traced right back to your spine. After an injury, your body can often heal itself. But sometimes, like when you break a bone, you need medical attention to help your body heal properly |
Herniated, Bulging, or Extruded Discs These are not uncommon after a car accident. Discs are the spacers between your vertebrae. Most people think they are shock absorbers, but because they are fluid filled, they often take the brunt of the damage. In a car accident, it is common for the outer portion of the disc to bulge or sometimes herniate. This can result in excruciating pain, sometimes leading to an inability to even stand straight, a condition called antalgic posture. |
Whiplash Whiplash is a very specific kind of injury most often happening during a rear end car accident. The head is like a bowling ball on a stick and when struck your neck makes the motion of a whip lashing – snapping rapidly backward, then forward then backward again. Obviously, this causes damage to the nerves, discs, tendons, and muscles. Whiplash is very common in all severities of car accidents. |
Dr. Matt frequently refers people to massage therapy. Other common therapeutic options include acupuncture and physical therapy. These things do not replace chiropractic adjustments; they are best when used together. Think about brushing and flossing your teeth. They both have the same goal of keeping your mouth healthy, but two different approaches. Likewise, chiropractic can go hand in hand with other therapies to get you feeling and functioning your best. Dr. Matt has many people he loves to refer to if this is necessary on your road to healing. |
If you are seriously injured and need immediate medical attention you will obviously get to the ER first. Once you are stable from serious injuries, your next stop should be the chiropractor. You do not need a referral from your PCP or another provider before setting up an appointment. Chiropractors can serve as your initial stop to get started on your healing journey. Dr. Matt has helped hundreds of people recover from the trauma of a car accident, even people who were in multiple accidents back-to-back. Many of those patients have become long time members of the practice and we love to see them reaching their potential! |
